Questions: estockwood@concordps.org

In addition to reading a Big 6 and a Side Trip book, rising 7th graders
should read
A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park.

Watch the trailer before you read.

As you read, keep track of
1) the attributes that you have in common with Salva and/or Nya
2) the attributes that make you different from Salva and/or Nya

You should create a page or two in your journal recording the
commonalities and differences.

In addition to reading a Big 6 and a Side Trip book, rising 8th graders
should read
The Giver, by Lois Lowry

As you read The Giver, pay attention to the essential characteristics
of Jonas's society. In September, you will be asked to write an essay
in which you explain how those characteristics exist in an attempt
to create a just and equal society but ultimately make the society
flawed/unjust
.  In the essay you will use textual evidence, so you
may want to plan ahead for that as you read this summer.

Do NOT write an essay this summer. Just keep track of details
(quotes/evidence) from the book.
